Abstract

Objectives: This study explores the effectiveness of Self-Help Group (SHG) therapy in preventing drug abuse amongst adolescents.

Methods: A Cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted with  with 80 junior high school students in Aceh, Indonesia. Participants were divided into intervention and control groups. The Intervention group underwent a six-week self-help group  (SHG) therapy program. Outcomes including knowledge, attitudes, desire to use drugs, social support, and self-efficacy were assessed via self-report questionnaires.

Results: The intervention group showed significant improvements in knowledge (p=0.001), attitudes (p=0.001), and a reduced desire to use drugs (p=0.001). There was no significant change in social support (p=0.139), but a significant decrease in self-efficacy (p=0.007).

Conclusion: Self-help group (SHG) therapy is effective for enhancing knowledge and attitudes and reducing drug use intention among adolescents. Additional strategies are needed to strengthen social support and self-efficacy.
